Festival of the Walks

After the success of the initial Festival of the Walks the event will run again in 2010. It will be an eight day festival of guided walks, community and cultural events that celebrate the natural beauty of the Hinterland, healthy activity and showcase local attractions. The festival will run from August 21 - 29.

Hinterland Tourism Sunshine Coast is again the driving force behind the festival and hopes to build an even bigger program for this year involving the whole range. There will be over twenty guided walks this year including the children's story walk, garden walks, nature walks, artist's walks and a large fundraising walk connecting communities and villages.

The absolute beauty and charm of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland offers visitors the opportunity to experience a magnificent selection of rainforest and mountain walks, ranging from easy to strenuous, from 20 minute strolls to walks of several days.

Experience some of the range's most scenic areas: warm subtropical rainforest, tall open eucalypt forest and picturesque waterfalls.

The area has many superb walks. Individual walks maps have been produced for the most popular walks. These are available at the local information centres or can be down loaded from the Maps section of this site. The Individual walks maps provide the opportunity for visitors to the area to enjoy a self guided tour. The maps highlight points of interest and other useful information. They are available free of charge! Walking groups may be conducting guided walks in the area during the Festival. Visitors are encouraged to contact these groups direct if looking for a guided walk. Contact details appear on this site under the Walking Groups section.

The most extensive of the walks is the Great Walk which winds through the scenic Sunshine Coast hinterland. Information about all of the walks on the hinterland can be accessed here.

The Sunshine Coast hinterland is about 90 kilometres north of Brisbane. As you leave the highway and head up the range, enjoy views of mountains and valleys to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east.

The Maleny, Montville, Kenilworth and Glasshouse townships and the villages of Flaxton & Mapleton provide unique shopping and a range of accommodation options from family motels to luxurious hinterland retreats, bed and breakfasts and caravan parks.

The Festival will also feature a music program with local artists performing during the weekends. Details of the Music Walk which gives visitors the opportunity to stroll between the musical entertainment whilst enjoying the cafes, shops and galleries will be posted on the Events page. This year participants will be able to register for the festival and subscribe to guided walks online.

If you would like to offer a guided walk, a cultural event or associated services please contact us at this email address. Submissions for the program need to be received by 31 March 2010.
